My name is Sid and I live in Japan.

Well, here I am, 5 years later.

It seems strange that all of this is ending now. It feels sudden, but I know I’ve been looking at the end point from the very start. As you probably know, JET Program contracts can only be renewed for 5 years. After that… well, that’s what ESID is for, isn’t it?

My contract is over in just over eight weeks. Eek! I thought I’d reflect on my time on JET, hopefully give advice to those coming, and make a little content for my blog here. In the next few weeks, I’ll focus on one topic per week.

Please feel free to comment and ask questions! I would love to hear from you and include your thoughts into these posts.

Week 1: Expectations, Arrival, and First Impressions

Every long-term experience begins with expectations. This week explores the assumptions, hopes, fears, and misconceptions I carried with me before coming to Japan, as well as the realities I encountered after arriving. Looking back at those first impressions reveals both how Japan surprised me and how much I have changed.

Week 2: Life as an ALT

The role of an Assistant Language Teacher is difficult to explain until you’ve lived it. This week explores the realities of working in Japanese schools, the challenges of the job, and the lessons I learned along the way.

Week 3: Japanese Schools

Schools are one of the clearest reflections of a society’s values. Through daily life in classrooms and staff rooms, I gained insights into discipline, responsibility, hierarchy, and community. This week examines what Japanese schools reveal about Japan itself.

Week 4: Language and Communication

Language is more than words. Living in Japan taught me about communication styles, social expectations, nonverbal cues, and the ways people navigate relationships through language. This week explores what I learned from speaking, and sometimes failing to speak, language(s).

Week 5: Community, Friendship, and Belonging

One of the greatest challenges of living abroad is finding a sense of belonging. This week focuses on friendships, community involvement, loneliness, and the relationships that shaped my experience.

Week 6: Everyday Japan

The most meaningful parts of life abroad often aren’t dramatic experiences but everyday routines. This week looks at the habits, systems, conveniences, frustrations, and ordinary moments that defined daily life in Japan.

Week 7: Culture, Values, and Social Norms

Many aspects of culture become visible only after years of observation. This week explores the unwritten rules, social expectations, and values that I gradually noticed while living in Japan.

Week 8: Stories, Growth, and Looking Forward

The final week reflects on memorable stories, personal growth, and the lasting impact of my time on JET. Rather than serving as a conclusion, these posts explore how the experience continues to shape the next chapter of my life in Japan.
